Every little girl is a princess at heart who enjoys being transported into the world of castles and magical creatures, mostly through books and movies. But what if you could recreate the spellbinding and beautiful allure of your little princess’ favourite fairytale in her very own room? With exciting themes, soft and glittery fabrics, baby hues and a little bit of creativity, you can give your little doll the space that she has always dreamt of having. Here are D’Decor’s expert tips on creating the best girly bedrooms to get you started on the right note.
Theme for a dream We all have had that childhood-favourite book or movie that we have read or watched over and over, even conjured up images in our mind of how things would play out if they were part of our reality. Well, the good news is that, with the kids’ décor market booming like never before, your daughter can actually live her fairytale dream. Whether she’s smitten by the icy, sparkling-blue beauty of the movie Frozen or can’t have enough of The Little Mermaid’s underwater adventures, you can recreate her fantasy world by opting for a single theme and tying in the other elements of the room décor with it. For instance, when going for a Frozen theme, opt for theme-related items such as bed linen or curtains and team them with rugs, lampshades and upholstery in similar colours.
Deck the walls!
When doing up your kid’s room, treat the walls as not just an enclosure but a canvas that you can use to showcase your creativity as well as your daughter’s favourite things. If you’re going for a fairytale theme, you can also opt for a wall décor relevant to that theme. If you find the idea of wallpapering the entire room with a thematic wallpaper a tad over the top, consider creating a focal point by using the wallpaper on one of the walls and painting the others in soft neutral hues of pink, blue or green. Wallpapers with a uniform pattern such as hearts, balloons or stars are more generic and will go with most themes, saving you the trouble of changing them every time your daughter gets bored of her existing room décor. Use decals, paintings and photographs of fairytale elements like unicorns, rainbows, sun, stars or anything else that catches your kid’s fancy. If you have a flair for art and are in the mood for some DIY, why not paint a wall yourself? Don’t think twice before involving your little one in the project; not only will it help improve her imagination and creativity, but will also be a great bonding exercise between you two.
A bed fit for royalty
Your daughter may be too young to take a princess nap, but that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t sleep in a beautiful and comfortable bed fit for a princess. To imbue her room with a royal vibe and ensure she sleeps snugly, opt for a wooden or wrought iron canopy bed and adorn it with lightweight and shimmery sheer fabric in a light colour like white or grey. If a canopy bed is not an option, simply upholster the bed’s headboard in a fabric in baby hues of colours like pink, yellow and blue and drape some sheer fabric around it. To make the whole fairytale experience more intense and fantastical, you can also twirl fairy lights around the pillars of a four-poster bed. Remember, a fairytale bed is incomplete without soft quilts and fluffy pillows, so populate your little girl’s bed will frilly pillows in silky satins of her choice.
Shimmery fabrics
Create a scattered stardust-like atmosphere in your daughter’s bedroom by using sheer drapes and curtains. If you have already picked out theme-based curtains for the room, layering them with white net or sheer curtains will not only make them stand out more but also enhance the magical appeal of the space. If your little princess is a fan of classics like Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty, using Victorian valances, window scarves or cords with tassels can help infuse a Victorian castle-style charm in the room. For the bed linen, layer soft silky satin sheets or a velvet quilt in a solid colour with stark whites to create a striking contrast.
Soft floors for tender little feet
Little kids spend a lot of time on the floor, be it to play with their toys or indulge in something creative. To make sure your princess is relaxed and comfortable while she is at play, use rugs and carpets made from thick and fluffy fabrics to create soft flooring. This will not only enhance the warm and luxurious feel of the room but also prevent your little one from getting hurt or catching a chill. Opt for rugs with a higher thread count or a shaggy carpet as these tend to be softer and warmer, making them absolutely right for a fairytale-theme room. While light-coloured fabrics, such as white or cream, work best for any room, it’s best to opt for fabrics in rich colours such as magenta, maroon or brown as they don’t get dirty easily and also look more elegant, which is just what your little doll’s fairytale bedroom needs.
